Kaleidoscopic Thoughts

The inane ramblings, idle threats, and wrathful bitchery of an animal activist (cat enthusiast), coffee addict (kind of), and book reader (always).

I desperately wish I was European...

tendertough asked: you're so entitled to POC's explanations of your white privilege that it's nauseating

Then by all means, take it upon yourself to lift my sad sad ignorance. I simply don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t properly understand the woeful plight of the POC. Uh-oh, was my white privilege showing?

Before we get into my ignorance, can we check yours? Can you define whiteness for me again? Can you please let me in on the one identifying trait that every white person has in common with one another? I’ll wait. Let me hear why my parents, who are Eastern European and immigrated during the Cold War, were privileged in a way that unfair (trust me, they weren’t). I’ll be the first and last to merit that there is a heap of institutional racism, but no one needs your help identifying themselves. It’s ‘their’ identity. You don’t get to tell them what they are. For a queer person, this shouldn’t be groundbreaking.

If I needed your help identifying myself— I’d ask for it. Until then, don’t stick labels on me that I don’t explicitly request. Mkay? I’m still waiting for the answers to the questions from my last post as well— though something tells me I’ll be waiting quite a while.

YOU’RE ALL WHITE

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S NOT OKAY TO IDENTIFY YOUR WHITENESS?

i knew the answer to the question when i asked it….

This frustrated me. Why should I identify my whiteness? It’s called ‘my’ identity for a reason. If I choose to identify myself as white, that’s fantastic for me. If I don’t, that’s just as valid. As queer people, and many other celebrated queer theorists have made similar statements, I’m not so sure we have a race to call our own. I certainly won’t identify with a race that’s worked to pretty much fuck over the better half of the globe. Why should I? Don’t tell me how to identify myself. Don’t place me in a group I don’t want to belong to. If the original poster of this was queer, this shouldn’t seem like a ground breaking request.

So what is whiteness? What does it mean to be white and what do all white people have in common? Yep, you guessed it: nothing. Don’t create a monolith of whiteness and I won’t create a monolith of blankness or asianess. Newsflash, not all white people are privileged in the same way. I won’t deny that institutional racism exists, but I also won’t pretend that you or anyone else has the right to tell anyone what they should identify themselves as.

At least you gave it the misandry tag for me…

i firmly believe that men can’t be feminists.  maybe they can be feminist allies.  but since i’ve yet to meet a truly non mansplaining man, i’d like them all out of a movement dedicated to me, thanks!

Really? Just because you have yet to meet a man who doesn’t ‘mansplain’ obviously does not mean that one doesn’t exist. It truly frightens me when I see feminists recreating the same exclusion and oppression that they are allegedley trying to fight. Just as woman are not a monolithic group— neither are men. They aren’t all privileged through patriarchy and they’re not all invested in the oppression and marginalization of some women. Don’t make feminism into man bashing (it isn’t), it’s about challenging patriarchy and patriarchy does not equate to men. Read bell hooks’ ‘Feminism is for Everyone’ and check your weirdly warped view of humanity before trying to lump half of the population into one oppressive group— it’s far from that easy.

But if you pause to think about it, it’s clear that none of us were born into the world knowing that men are supposed to like football more than women. This is a cultural belief we picked up somewhere along the line. Worst of all, the idea of the “male psyche” has historically been used to convince women that there are some forms of male behavior - such as infidelity, inability to commit, or emotional incompetence - that are unchangeable. This mentality basically tells women that they need to “accept” or even “submit to” hurtful male behavior because men, supposedly (because of this infamous “male psyche”), can’t help themselves.
